Title: Body composition analysis of apparently healthy staff members of a multi specialty hospital in south India - an awareness initiative

Background: Lack of awareness regarding lifestyle changes and diet, is a major factor contributing to the rising globesity. Bioelectrical Impedance method is a simple non-invasive technique to analyze body composition.

Objectives: To create awareness about prevalence of obesity in staff members working in health-care sector and to initiate diet and Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC).

Methods: Apparently healthy staff members across various departments of the hospital were taken as subjects using random sampling method. Height, weight and BMI was recorded. Body composition analysis was done using OMRON HBF-212 Karada Scan (Bio electrical impedance method). Data collected was percentages of body fat, skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat, water content and metabolic age. Diet counselling and Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes were advised for the subjects with abnormal parameters.

Results: Out of 233 subjects, 33% were overweight and 18% were obese. Mean values for BMI, body fat, water content, muscle mass and visceral fat percentages were 26.76±15.62, 26.07±8.54, 52.14±6.01, 44.62±8.62 and 5.77±4.16. BMI, body fat%, visceral fat% and metabolic age between age-groups were significantly high (p=0.000) while muscle mass was significantly low (p= 0.048). 162 subjects (69.52%) required diet counselling and TLC advice by the Registered Dietitian of the hospital.

Conclusion: Obesity and abnormal body composition was found to be prevalent among the employees of health care sector. Periodic diet counselling and Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes could reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome in these subjects.
